Provided as an alternative to the busy emergency department, the Crisis Support Space allows people experiencing a mental health crisis access to a safe, comfortable and calm environment. Staffed by RFQ peer workers and Queensland Health clinicians, the Crisis Support Space is located on the Ipswich Hospital campus.
With a focus on an integrated model of care (delivered by both clinical and non-clinical professionals), the Crisis Support Space aims to de-escalate psychological distress and/or suicidality by equipping people with the tools, support, and understanding they need to move forward. The warm, low-stimulus environment, paired with the calming demeanour of staff, works to circuit break adrenaline responses and soothe the sympathetic nervous system.
While enjoying a refreshment and mindful activity, clients and their loved ones are invited to explore strategies to manage a crisis while being connected with relevant support services in the community.
The Crisis Support Space is part of a state-wide crisis system reform strategy aimed at preventing suicide and reducing acute admissions by providing relief for psychological distress.

The Crisis Support Space is a partnership between Richmond Fellowship Queensland, Queensland Health, and West Moreton Hospital & Health Service.
