With compassion fatigue a well-recognised issue for many healthcare employees, RFQ is the first NGO in the world to implement Schwartz Rounds. Monthly Schwartz Rounds are a regular, facilitated space for RFQ staff to come together and talk about the human side of our work and how the work impacts us emotionally. Schwartz Rounds are a space for reflection and connection, focused on sharing and listening rather than operational discussions or problem-solving. It’s a safe and confidential forum where we can listen, share, and feel connected through real experiences.
Schwartz Rounds began with the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare in the US. They were inspired by Kenneth B. Schwartz, who, during his own time as a patient, noticed how much compassionate care and simple human connection from staff can matter, particularly when things are hard. That idea sits at the heart of Schwartz Rounds today.
Schwartz Rounds provide a supportive space to:
- Remind us we’re not alone and that others are often carrying similar experiences too
- Offer protected time to pause and reflect on what we’re feeling and experiencing (this is about reflection, not problem-solving or training)
- Strengthen empathy, understanding, and connection across teams, roles, and disciplines
- Recognise and make space for the emotional load that can come with caring, supporting, and delivering services
When RFQ staff take part in Schwartz Rounds, we’re living our values – because providing compassionate services is easier to sustain when we work in a compassionate workplace.
